“Bones” is hard for me to watch. Maybe my education ruined it for me. I got my degree in Physical Anthropology and Forensic Sciences. While Dr. “Bones” Brennan does use anatomically correct names for skeletal elements, She uses them in the strangest context. In one episode, she was attempting to emasculate a man by pointing out the skeletal features of his face that were not real characteristic of most male skulls. Bones criticized his unpronounced “mental eminence” (chin), “supra orbital torus” (brow ridge), “occipital protuberance” (bump on the base of the back of the skull) and “mastoid process” (bump behind the ears on either side of the skull). Okay, so she got the terms right…..there is no way she was able to tell that he had an “unpronounced” occipital protuberance or mastoid process by looking at the guy’s face since those features are on the back of the head andcovered in hair or hidden behind the ears. True, they are good indicators or sex on a skull, but not something you would make fun of a guy for….Mostly because it’s not something you can really talk about from looking at his FACE. I know, I know, it’s just pretend, but still. On one episode Bones referenced her “cultural dissertation”. There is no reason a forensic anthropologist would write his/her dissertation on culture. That’s what cultural anthropologists do. Duh. I’m guessing medical shows are hard for med. Students or doctors to watch also. It’s hard to appreciate a show for it’s entertainment value when you can’t stop focusing on everything you know to be wrong or too far fetched.
