Over the weekend I watched “Precious”. I’m not one to really get emotionally involved with movies, but this one was hard to not be completely drawn into. I’m not gonna give any of the movie away, but I will say that it was both physically and emotionally painful to watch. I caught myself wincing and squinting my eyes during some scenes and gritting my teeth trying to hold back tears in others. I actually felt physically sick through a scene or two. I made it about a third of the way through my popcorn before it was just too much . This is definitely not a popcorn munching movie. Food doesn’t set well with disease, devastation and misfortune. Blah. Gabourey Sidibe did a phenomenal job playing the title character. With Mo’nique, Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez all co-starring, the film seems to have potential for disaster. Not that these ladies are bad at what they do. They are great at what they do. Seriousness just isn’t generally what they do. Mariah took off the extensions and 24 karat gold dust tan and Mo’nique played a character there there was absolutely nothing funny about. J Lo did a fantastic job playing a strong, big-hearted, lesbian. In the beginning of the movie, Precious lapsed into her fantasy very frequently to escape whatever terrible scenario she was facing at the moment. Later though, we saw fewer and fewer fancy misconceptions as Precious began to embrace her real life. While this movies was incredibly hard to watch, I would watch it again. The simple videography and real life situation made for a much more enthralling movie than any end-of-the-world-sappy-love-story flick. Ever.
