Cemeteries were created from the ancient belief that a body have to be whole and complete for it’s soul to make it to Heaven. Well, that and burying the dead is a more sanitary option than leaving them out and about. But people were placed in coffins to help the body remain whole for Heaven. Way back when, the punishments for the most heinous crimes consisted of decapitation or other means or breaking the body so that the soul would never be allowed into Heaven. But then again, way back when, thievery and treason were some of the worst acts you could commit. Murderers and rapists still got to stay whole and repent. So….clearly we have moved on and secretaries have become a pretty dated means of laying our loved ones to rest. No matter how expensive a coffin is, or how comfy it feels, nature will take it’s course. Tree roots will permeate the coffin walls, water and ice will cause cracks and the acidity of the earth will eventually erode it away. However, this process can take decades and these days, the cemetery will likely be uprooted and relocated before any of that happens to make room for a new subdivision. So much for resting in peace. Today, it makes more sense both spatially and financially, to have loved ones cremated. Keeping a body intact for Heaven went out the window when most deaths began to require an autopsy before the body is released for services. Organ donation is also a worthy cause that ensures a body’s incomplete arrival to Heaven. I think most people would agree that a persons admittance or denial to walk through the Golden Gates isn’t contingent on the condition of the body that they left behind.
