Library Sciences?

- Author: Megan Books

My friend’s brother is going to school for library sciences. I didn’t even know that was a designated degree path. I know a good librarian needs to know a lot about reference books, research methods, and general literature, but isn’t that one of those things that comes with experience? Besides, books are sadly becoming obsolete. There is absolutely no reason for some one to read five books on a topic that they can research with just as much, if not more, thoroughness online. As long as you know you are using reliable websites, you can access most books and academic journals online now. Many research websites are free now, or cost about as much as you would spend checking a book out for a week. Because so much information is online now, you don’t really need to go to the library that often. Libraries make great places for kids to learn to appreciate books, but so does the little kid sections and Barnes and Nobles and Hastings. I like books and I don’t want them to disappear or be rendered obsolete, but I don’t think it’s wise to make a career out of them. Eventually there will be fewer and fewer library jobs as more and more of them shut down and give way to online data bases. As much as I hate to see this happen, I know I’m not going to spend three hours scouring encyclopedias when I can find the answer to any question in just a few minutes online.

Chuck P.

- Author: Megan Books

Chuck Palahniuk is an interesting guy. Well, his novels are interesting, I don’t know the guy. Because some of the themes and subject matter in his books can be a bit hard to swallow sometimes, Palahniuk has been labeled as a nihilist by critics. I could see that I suppose, but that does not make me like his novels any less. Maybe it is the shock factor that he brings to literature that initially drew me in (Hey, we all stare at train wrecks don’t we?) but after I made it through the first grisly book, I realized that I really do like the guy’s minimalistic approach to writing. Palahniuk sticks to short words and simple sentences. His writing very much mimics the average person’s speech patterns. This minimalistic way of writing also helps to substantiate the characters in his stories to make them seem more real. With a few exceptions, Palahniuk’s characters are generally reminiscent of someone who has been marginalized by society or another force. His nobody characters come off as aggressive or self-destructive but often end up wrapped up in very philosophical deliveries, either from the characters themselves, or by the narrator. Palahniuk employs very cynical, black humor to the impossibly ironc scenarios that unravel through his books. Palahniuk often begins his novels at the end of the story so that the reader is left to discover how it was that this event came to be. Despite his raunchy, disturbing content, Palahniuk is still selling tons of books and maintaining more followers than critics. While his novels will never make Oprah’s book list, they are still pretty entertaining if your looking for something quick and a little out of the ordinary.

Fact or Fiction

- Author: Megan Books

Fiction books are fun, but if the story does not pick up pretty quick or seems to drag on a little too long, I generally get board and abandon the book. Who needs to sit through tons of pages of the same old predictable things when you can read the beginning and the end and fill in the rest with your imagination, thusly creating a story that’s probably more entertaining than what the other 187 pages in between have to offer? Wow, that was a run-on if I ever saw one. Don’t get me wrong, there are some really great fictional novels out there. I have some favorite authors that wouldn’t disrespect by skipping pages, but they are few and far between. Maybe that’s just saying more about my attention span than anything else. Non-fiction is another story. Unless it’s a math textbook , or something in the same family, I can read a non-fiction cover to cover and not get bored. I’ll read about any topic from WWII, to quantum physics. I’m not a pocket protected, wheezing, little mutant or anything, I just like learning about things. Non-fiction is tricky though. You gotta make sure your reading facts, not some guy’s vague recollection of an event. Sometimes it’s hard to discern between fact or fiction. Some authors are tricky and convincing. Once I thought I was reading a true account of the evolution of our society till I got to the end. Then all I learned was that the Devil was polluting the minds of liberals all over the world and the Bible is the only thing that would save us. Maybe it’s true. I don’t know, but it wont help me win trivia games or impress people with my knowledge on ungulates or tuberculosis.

Back Off!

- Author: Greg Annoying

With all the hype of the Twilight movies and books, I can understand that there are a lot of people out there who are pretty obsessed with the new movie and the actors in it. What I can’t understand is everyone creeping around trying to get personal information about the actors and being nosey and trying to get in to their lives. The main actors in the show, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, have been linked together since before the first movie was in theaters. They have done several interviews together where it’s pretty obvious that they are dating. This, along with the parts they play in the movie as Bella and Edward, has caused insanity among the paparazzi and press. People are going wild, chasing them around trying to make them talk and taking pictures of them when they are trying to get away. Can you imagine that life? You are that young, and everyone in the country is trying to find out who your boyfriend or girlfriend is, and they are running around chasing you to catch you holding hands with them? I can sit here and blab on and on about how I think they should just leave them alone, btu they are not going to. Even if they confessed and said they were together, people will just not leave them alone. This is why I love my personal life, and I love my privacy. I feel so bad for these people, and I think it would be impossible to have a healthy relationship when put in this position. I feel sorry for y’all, and everyone needs to just back off!

New Moon Premier – SPOILERS! Don’t read if you don’t want to know!

- Author: Greg Books

If you haven’t seen the movie and don’t want for it to be spoiled, then I would suggest you stop reading RIGHT NOW! GO AWAY! Unless you have or you don’t care that I might spoil it.

I loved it! It was waay better than Twilight. The new director did a lot of things differently, and the movie was more believable. They felt like they were really in love, in the last one I didn’t really get that from it. The acting seemed a lot more humorous than the last movie too, and it followed pretty close with the book. There were a few things that were out of place and you could tell that people in the audience were confused about it, but they were necessary to make sense of the novel in movie form. Edward wasn’t hardly in the movie, the main focus was on Bella and Jacob. He was only at the beginning and the end, and during the movie you just saw his figure when he was trying to tell Bella to stop acting stupid and being dangerous. They made it look like there was a bigger romance between Bella and Jacob than it seems in the books, but I guess they had to because that’s what the people wanted to see. The wolves looked decent, on Twilight the graphics kind of sucked when they tried to show the things vampires could do and I think they did better on this one. The Volturi were what I expected, Dakota Fanning as Jane did a really good job and looked really good, but she had a pretty small part in the movie so you didn’t really get to judge it. Now, I am so excited that I saw it at the premier because it would be my luck to fall onto a blog like this one and get mad at someone for spoiling some of the movie. I am excited to go see it again sometime!

New Moon Premier – SAFE TO READ! No Spoilers

- Author: Greg Books

Sooo… as I’ve been gushing about for the past few weeks, last night was FINALLY the premier of the new Twilight movie New Moon. My cousin, his friend, and my boyfriend all came over to my house around 9 and watched a bit of TV, then headed on over to get in the line for the movie. It was INSANE. There were so many different premier theaters that there were different lines all over the place. You had to go in with your tickets and get a bracelet that showed which theater you were in, and then find your line and wait in it. There were tons and tons of people sitting outside in their lines and I was scared that we were going to have to do that, but thank God we found ours and there was still a bit of room to sit inside. We were about 50 or so people back, so we knew our seats were going to be decent. We waited, took turns going outside and walking around or sitting in the car, and about two hours later they let us go into the theater. We rushed in and just barely found four seats that were together. We were on about the third row back, which was perfect. Then, once we were in we still had about an hour left to wait, so I went out to get some concession stuff and the lines out there were horrible too. It took about thirty minutes to get some popcorn and coke for us, which was probably good cause I was so impatient for it to start it was nice to have something to do. SO, for my next blog, don’t read it if you haven’t seen the movie because it will definitely have some spoilers in it and I don’t want anyone to get mad at me!

The Book is Always Better… or is it?

- Author: Greg Books

I hate how when you read a book, and then it comes out to be a movie, you are always disappointed in the movie. I think it’s just impossible for a movie to portray what someone reads. Any time you read a book, you get that specific mental image of what you think the characters look like, and everyone can’t have the same perception of the descriptions that are given in words. You might see the entire settings different, or a scene you had imagined in your head so well may come out differently when shown on TV. I think it’s just hard for directors to please everyone. I try not to get too upet when movies aren’t what I had hoped after reading the book, because I understand it can’t happen exactly. With the Twilight Series, a lot of people were mad about some of the actors that were chose to portray certain characters, because those actors were not what they had imagined when they read the books. I, on the other hand, really enjoyed the movie in part because I watched it before I read the books. So, when I was reading the books, I was imagine the actors from the movie doing the things they were doing, and I didn’t have the chance to make up in my mind an image of what they should look like before hand. Sometimes it’s better that way, to see the movie first and then read the books so you can appreciate them both.

New Moon FINALLY

- Author: Greg Books

So, the day is finally here. Twilight premiers tonight for the normal people that didn’t get to go to the one in L.A. I’ve been re-reading the New Moon book, and today I think we’re all gonna watch the first movie and then head up there really early. I don’t know how early we should have to go, but from what I’m hearing it’s going to be pretty chaotic. I keep checking my wallet to make sure I haven’t lost the tickets because that is something that would happen to me. My cousin and I got really lucky when we found out they had opened another show and we rushed up there to get the tickets, and I would be pretty mad if I did something stupid and lost them. So, I guess for my evening I’m going to be sitting at the movie theater waiting in a line for a few hours, but it should be worth it once we get to see the movie before any one else. I knew that if I waited to go see it that people would ruin some of the parts or tell me what they thought about it and I would have a preconceived idea of the movie and I didn’t want that. I know that the majority of my family will be attending this premier all over the country because we all got the books and started reading them together, so someone would definitely call me and spoil it. So, I hope everyone one out there got tickets that wanted them and for those who didn’t, I’d suggest you don’t read any of my blogs tomorrow titled “Twilight” or “New Moon”, cause I might make ya mad.

New Moon Premier… Tickets in hand!

- Author: Greg Books

So, I’ve been really excited about the premier of the new Twilight movie, New Moon, coming out for a few months. But, for some reason I kept getting side tracked and by the time I took a moment to get online and buy the tickets for the midnight premier, they were all sold out. I have to work until 6 the Friday afterwards, so I knew I wouldn’t go to a matinee show, and I assumed the evening showing on the premier night would be sold out as well. So, we had planned to try and go on Sunday. But, the other night I got on and checked again to see if they had opened up anymore, and, to my excitement, they had. And it wasn’t just a show, it was going to be “digital projection” (what ever that means) and is supposed to be even better. We called the lady to find out what it meant, and she said it could be related to a high definition movie screening and they had just opened it a few days ago, so they still had seats available. So, my cousin and I went and got out tickets last night for the 12:05 AM showing on Thursday night, Friday morning. Which means I bet I’ll be at the theater until around 3 am, and I have to be at work at 9. Oh well, it is worth it to be tired one day at work to get to see the movie before anyone else does, so no one can ruin it for me! I can’t wait!

Tucker Max

- Author: Greg Books

A book that I’ve reread several times, and hasn’t gotten old yet, is “I Hope they Serve Beer in Hell” written by Tucker Max. This book has recently gains more popularity because it has been turned into a movie with the same title. Tucker Max is an asshole to women and thinks he is some kind of gift from God. If I met him in person, I know that I would be annoyed and hate him. But, his stories are hilarious. For someone with the sense of humor that I have I think his stories are really funny, and he’s actually a good writer. I wish that they were fictitious, but he claims they are all real and that only names have been changed. I haven’t seen the movie yet, and I’m really not making it high on my to-do list because I don’t want it to ruin the goodness of the book. I wish I could refer you to his message board to learn a little more about him and his followers, but he recently took the messageboard down. I used to love that web site, there was a lot of comedic gold to be found there too, and I miss it. Now, either go buy his book, watch the movie, or just search online and I’m sure you can find a few of his stores or at least a few other opinions on him, some of which may not be as nice as mine.
