Icy Roads

- Author: Greg Annoying

Last night as I was driving home, some ass hole pulled out in front of my. Now, this isn’t a rare occurrence in Lubbock because no one here knows how to drive, but this instance really made me mad. I was on a curve right by my apartment, going a little under the speed limit because it was drizzling. Now, it had snowed earlier and the night before it had frozen. So, when he pulled out in front of me I was not looking forward to slamming my breaks down. I’m from somewhere where the roads freeze a lot during the winter and I know how to drive on them. Luckily, it was early enough in the day that the rain had not frozen over yet, but if it had, we would have gotten into a really bad accident. People from the south who don’t know how to drive: stay at home, or figure it out. You don’t take chances like you do on normal roads when it’s icy. If you aren’t absolutely positive that you are going to make it with no chance of accident, then just wait the 15 seconds for the car to go by and try again after that. If you’re in that big of a hurry, do you think getting into an accident is going to get you there faster than waiting a few seconds to go? Nope. So, everyone just needs to think a little lower when driving on the ice, and we can all be safe and get where were going with out having to make a stop at the hospital on the way.

Cold Weather Meals

- Author: Greg Food

One of the best parts about cold weather are all the foods that you can make. There are a lot of foods and meals that just don’t work in certain types of weather, and when it gets cold I start to crave them. I love beans and corn bread, but when the weather outside is 90 degree it doesn’t sound too great to just sit around and eat a hot bowl of beans and then go outside in the blistering sun. But, when it cold, it feels good to come in and fill your belly up with something really warm and filling. Tonight, I think I am going to make Stew. Stews are great to make when it is cold, because it makes a bunch of food and you usually don’t have to worry about cooking the next night or going to the grocery store to get something else to make in the cold. And, just the fact that it takes several hours to cook on the stove, it’s warm in the kitchen and is nice to be in there when you’re cooking. It’s completely understandable that people would be gaining weight during the colder seasons because of all the more filling food, and it’s just a good feeling when you’re cold to be full and then just sit around and not work out. I think I better get a work out in before eating my six servings of stew for dinner tonight!

Snow!

- Author: Greg Weather

Today was the first snow of the season in Lubbock! I’m not the biggest fan of cold weather unless the activities I’m interested in for the day need it, like building a snow man or snow boarding, but it’s still exciting to see the first snow of the season. And, it being December 1st, it just make it even more exciting. In Dumas it snows a lot more than in Lubbock, so I’m used to seeing it, but it’s funny to see how excited people get that don’t have it in their towns very often. When I lived in the dorms and the first snow came, the girls were freaking out. It probably wasn’t even an inch of snow and they were out side trying to make snow men and laying in it. You could still see the pavement through the snow and Tech decided that it was too dangerous to have school and cancelled it at half day. It’s cold and wet and makes it hard to drive, but I’m still excited about it coming today. Christmas time is finally near, and the snow is more proof that I don’t have to wait much longer to get to be home with the family and buying all the presents in the world! Just hearing that the month is finally December makes it okay for me to start singing Christmas songs and decorating!

Weather Confusion

- Author: Greg Annoying

The grass is greener on the other side has a much more literal meaning for me. I have a hard time deciding what type of weather I want. When it’s hot outside, I wish it were cooler. But, when I’m freezing, all I can think about is the summer time and being outside in the sun. The only real seasons I can enjoy myself are certain times in the spring and certain times in the fall. Right at the end of winter when it starts to get warm, those first few weeks when you can wear shorts and still be comfortable, those are the best. It’s not quite warm enough to be laying by the pool, but you still feel the warm sun on your skin after a cooler morning. And, when the summer is starting to come to an end, the evenings are cooler and it feels so good to sit outside. You aren’t sweating any time you leave the house, but during the middle of the day it’s still warm enough to be at the pool and be comfortable. And, each season that I’m in I wish I was in the other one so I could wear the clothes that come with it. When it’s hot outside, I want to wear jeans and my cute beanies, but I can’t. When I’m freezing and going out, I always wish that I could wear a sleeveless top or a dress and be comfortable, but I can’t. I wish it was just the beginning of spring time weather all year!

I want to do Something Outside!

- Author: Greg Hunting

Here lately I have been craving some outside time. I want to go to the lake and do some fishing before it gets too cold, or I want to just go camping out somewhere pretty. Derek is going to McLean next week for Thanksgiving and he gets to go hunting while he’s there. I am hoping that while I am home for the holidays we at least go out and shoot or do something fun like that. I just know that when the weather starts to freeze I am going to miss being outside or at the lake or camping and I want to get some kind of fun outside trip in before it’s too late! Maybe I can convince my dad that we need to go fishing at the lake before Thanksgiving, because I know that he took off the week for vacation and he’s going to be hanging around the house. I assume they are going to watch to try and go shopping for black Friday this year and I’d really rather opt out of that and do something fun, and I bet it wouldn’t be hard to get my brother and dad to go with me because I know they would rather do something like that than be trapped in the mall with a million people going crazy. Or, maybe I’ll just have to set up a tent in my backyard with my dogs. That’s kind of roughing it. I’ll get to see the stars outside and some wild animals outside of my tent. That is going to be my last choice though for sure.

Snow Days

- Author: Greg Weather

I am so ready for it to snow here! I love this time of the year, I have always lived in a town where it snows around this time of the year, and here in Lubbock it doesn’t really do the same thing. Although my home town is only 170 miles north of here, the weather is completely different during this time of year. They have already gotten snow a few times this season, and we have yet to see one little flurry. When I was in school there, we had actual snow days because we couldn’t leave the house to get to work, here they will have them when it starts to snow a little beause they are scared of the drivers. There are a lot of people living in Lubbock from Southern Texas to go to college, and none of them really know how to drive on the ice. I’ve been driving on ice my whole life so I usually feel pretty safe behind the wheel, but it’s the others out there that don’t really know what they are doing that makes it dangerous. It’s not their fault, they just haven’t had to deal with it and sometimes do dangerous things while out on the road that puts themselves and others in danger. I have yet to built a snow man in Lubbock, while in Dumas we sometimes build entire igloos just for fun with the snow. I’ve never had an issue getting my car out, while sometimes in Dumas I wasn’t able to leave the driveway beause of the snow behind my car. I hope we get a good snow this year while I am in town visiting, or we get a decent one here in Lubbock!

Meteor Shower Tonight!

- Author: Greg News

Tonight, around 2:30 in the morning central time, there’s going to be a meteor shower. I would be really excited about this because I love it, but I don’t think I’m going to be able to stay up that late for it. Rough for me, but I’m going to try, or maybe go to bed and wake up for it then and then go back to bed. It’s called the Leonid shower, and it comes every year around this time. I know there was one earlier this year, but when we went outside to see it the clouds had taken over the sky and there was nothing to see. Tonight it’s supposed to be clear, the moon isn’t supposed to be bright, and there’s supposed to be around twenty to thirty meteors each hour. I’m jealous of Asia, because they are predicted to see around two hundred to three hundred an hour. Sounds AMAZING to me. In 1833 when this same shower came around, we actually went right through the debris and there were hundreds of thousands of meteors, to where the sky was all lit up. I hope I get to see a little bit of it, it’s been a long time since I’ve paid enough attention to the news to know when it’s going to actually happen. So, everyone, stay up late and go outside in the cold so you can see the free show!

Trying To Control The Weather, Seriously?

- Author: Greg Weather

So there’s actually a law in Texas stating that the government will develop a program that controls the weather. Oh yeah, it’s there folks. “20.003. Weather Modification and Control Grant Program: The department shall develop and administer a program awarding matching grants to political subdivisions of this state for weather modification and control.” This has to be the most idiotic thing I’ve ever heard. Do I really have to type it in times new roman size 12 before people realize YOU CAN’T CONTROL THE WEATHER? How could such coveted positions in government be held by such retards. Who passes a law like that? That would be a good topic to look up, past earth dwellers who thought they had control over the weather. Well them along with whoever wrote this damn law should go to the place for crazies because they’re not right in the head. If we could control the weather don’t you think that someone would have figured out how to do it a long time ago and we’d never even know what a tornado or hurricane were? Weather is one powerful force of nature and there’s definitely not a damn thing we can do about it. Sure there’s global warming and all that bullshit so yes, I guess we can effect the weather but only in a very small way and that very small way is not positively.

Texas Weather

- Author: Greg Weather

Texas weather is wack. Our state is generally thought to have a warmer climate but I’m not real sure why people make this misconception. It gets pretty damn cold here in the winter folks. It’s nothing like the East Coast or anything but we can get some awful winter weather around these parts. I feel like Texas has a lot of extremes in its weather. It can be in the 90s one day and 65 the next. Talk about getting sick and staying sick! I’ve never seen anything like it. The worst is when it rains here in West Texas. It’s so damn flat that there is nowhere for the water to go. Once the ground is saturated, the roads turn into small rivers and you literally need a small boat to get around. You would think that someone would have taken care of such a HUGE problem by now but no such luck. Texas is also famous for having spectacular thunderstorms. Around the beginning of April they start rolling in and they can be hell. These awful storms can produce hail and even spawn tornadoes. I love watching the lighting that usually accompanies the dark clouds though. It lights up the sky and literally puts on a show for you. Amazing. Hurricanes also give the coast of Texas A LOT of trouble. The gulf coast seems to be right smack in the middle of every other hurricane that forms. Poor Galveston Island. They got it bad last year. It just goes to show what a few hours of wind and rain can do.

Twister

- Author: Greg Weather

Twister is one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember when I was in the 5th grade, my dad took me to see it in the movie theater I had been begging my parents to let me see it because it was PG-13 and I figured they wouldn’t let me but my dad convinced my mom that it would be ok. I didn’t even care that I was a pre-teen going to the movies with my dad. I was just so excited to finally be seeing the movie. I’ve been fascinated by weather ever since I was young. I just think it’s so damn interesting because it’s something we, as humans, have no control over. Anyways, as soon as I saw the movie, I was instantly obsessed. I was convinced that I wanted to be a storm chaser and I still am actually. Everything about Twister was amazing. The beginning really throws you for a loop because Helen Hunt’s dad is killed by a tornado within the first 5 minutes! I thought it was really cool of Stephen Spielberg to include so many different tornadoes throughout the movie. Rather than just having a few tornado scenes, the whole movie is action packed and keeps you on the edge of your seat. From houses flying across the street to 18 wheelers being tossed into the air, this movie has all the action you could ask for. Although Twister is over a decade old, it’s still by far one of the best movies ever made!
