Getting a traffic ticket sucks. This is not a new revelation, I just wanted to go on the record and state that sometimes the law is not fun. On a balmy day in March of this year I was sitting in traffic when I look in my rear view mirror and I see the bubble gum machine going off behind me. Traffic was stop and go and I had been in the same lane for miles, so I was confident in the fact that I had not broken a law. Well, it turns out that I had. I was just hanging up a phone call when I got pulled over and, in compliance with the newly minted hands free law in New Mexico, I was using my hands-free headset that came with my phone. Apparently my headset is not in compliance with the hands-free law. Damn. So there I was, waiting to see a judge about my $212 fine. Court is an interesting place. You have all the people who broke the law, be it wearing headphones or kidnapping a child, all in one place. It surely is a motley crew. That day at the courthouse there was a Halloween party as well. It’s like a little salt on the wound as all the workers are happy, smiling, eating cake, enjoying their freedom while I and my law breaking brethren are shuffled around, waiting in lines, and watching happy civil servants eating cake. Sitting in the hallway waiting to be let into the courtroom makes for some interesting people watching. Folks are strategizing their defense, making new friends with those with similar rap sheets. The contempt and general bad mood of all those who are here is palpable.

There is only one thing in this world that makes me mad and that is when people who are disadvantaged (children, special needs, or anyone who doesn’t have the means to defend themselves, be it mentally or physically) are taken advantage of. I am ridiculously tolerant, even tempered, and maybe even too understanding, but all it takes is to hear about someone being raped, a child being abused, or elderly people being robbed and I just see red. I have absolutely no tolerance for people who do things like that. I don’t understand how it could possibly make somebody feel good by hurting others. Do you know how deranged a person has to be to take advantage of someone how is mentally retarded? They are on a level of shittieness that has yet to be defined. I get frustrated with ignorant people, especially racist people but they don’t make me mad. I think mad is different, like the highest level of anger, ya know. Racists are really close to joining the exclusive club of people who make me mad, though. They are ignorant in a way that they could choose to change if they wanted too. There is no reason to carry around hatred for people of different races. That’s just silly. These people are almost in the mentally retarded category, but not quite, so they have no excuse and I wouldn’t stand up for a racist if he was getting his ass kicked. I would probably egg on the other team.

Friends are a a great thing to have, but they can also be a pain in the ass sometimes. Take my best friend for example. She goes through these phases where she won’t talk to me for months. Why you ask? I have no idea. She can be a rel pain in the ass. We live in different cities now so maybe that’s why she’s being bitchy this time around. It’s possible that she got upset when I left New Mexico for other things. We lived together for quite a while, but it was time for me to go so I gave her a months notice and headed down the road. She told me she wasn’t upset at all and that all was fine, but it’s been over a month and she hasn’t had anything to do with me since I left. Despite my best efforts to be proactive about our friendship, she has acted despondent and short with me since my departure. This isn’t the first time she has been like this. She never has anything to do with me unless we live in the same town and she is single. Provided those variable are in my favor, my friend is the best one anyone could ever hope for. I’m tired of feeling she abandons me whenever we live far apart or when she has someone better to hang out with. It’s irritating, but at the end of the day, she is still there if I ever need her. I guess that’s all you can really hope for in a best friend. We all go through our ups and downs and I’ve come to accept the downs for what they are and welcome the ups no matter how shitty my friends acts in the mean time.

Since I’m having such a hard time figuring out what I want for Christmas, I got on the internet the other day and did some researching about what’s cool for girls to get right now. I went to best buy and looked at everything they had listed for women and some of them I think are unnecessary. They have a wine chilled that holds only one bottle, but you can adjust the temperature. This is one of those gifts that you give someone because you think it’s cool, but no one is going to use it. No one is going to just keep one bottle of wine chilled in it and have it plugged in all the time, and no one is going to remember in advance to plug the thing in hours in advance when they want to drink it. Just put it in the fridge, or get someone a wine chiller that holds more than one bottle. They have these new digital readers, where you can download books off the internet and then have them on the little palm reader. This is cool, but I don’t know if I want to give up my actually, tangible books. I love having books, and lending them to people when they’re good. If everyone has them some day, and it’s easy to transfer books, then maybe I’ll get one. For now, I’ll stick to my paper. They listed GPS, which is something I’d like, and a bunch of cameras, which I don’t need, and MP3 players, that I already have. So, I’m still stuck in the same place of not knowing what I want, but now I have a few more added options that I need to narrow down!

When my sister was in college, she got a kitten from the pound. Her name is Malley. She is now about 7 years old, and still living with my sister and her husband. My sister has always talked to the cat, so she meows NON STOP. Any time you’re around her she just meows even though she doesn’t need anything. It’s cute to have something follow you around all the time and want attention, but she’s hard to get used to because she’s so vocal. A few years ago, my sister got a little Boxer dog and named her Sadie. Sadie is one of the smallest full grown boxers I have ever seen because she was the runt, but she’s really cute and pretty. She has a fear of men, and we aren’t sure why since they got her as a puppy, but with some men she hides and wont let them touch her. Now, she has them both living in the house. It’s so cute to see how they can interact so well. I can’t imagine trying to get my cats to be comfortable around a big dog, they would hide or attack him. They just live in the same house, and never have fights. I would be scared to have my dog around cats because she would kill the cat, and leave my cats with a dog because they would attack him. So, the fact that they can just leave the pets there together all the time with no supervision is really nice. Someday, when I get pets, I want mine to be able to get along and be friends.

For the Texas Tech vs. Baylor game, we couldn’t get tickets to get seats at the game so we bought these tickets they have called party passes that let you inside the stadium with out a seat, but you can still watch the game and walk around. So, my cousins and I did that and were really, really excited, while my boyfriend and his friends family sat in a suite. They had a personal, little room where they could watch the TV out of a glass window or just watch it on one of the TVs in there. They had a free buffet filled with ribs and tons of other food, and all the drinks they could want. His friend got the tickets from his friend, and this suite was just his “overflow” suite for when all of his friends can’t fit into his main one. They got to walk around and drink where ever they wanted and it was free, while we were confined to a little bar area where our beers were nine buck a piece. Now, I can’t complain too much because I got what I wanted and what I paid for, but some day I really want to get to experience sitting in a suite in the Dallas Cowboys stadium. Just the fact that he had a seat all to him self during the game makes me jealous of the suite, because we stood the entire time unless we were in the bar. And looking at the pictures that he took while hanging out with his friends in there, partying it up, makes me want it even more.

Lately I have been thinking about getting some kind of a pet in my apartment, but the cons of that have outweighed the pros and I’ve decided to wait. The other day my boyfriend and I were talking about what we were going to get each other for Christmas and he mentioned getting a kitty for me. Now, it’s hard for me to turn it down since I want one so bad, but I just don’t know how I feel right now. Getting a pet as a gift seems like a lot of fun, but it’s a gift that you have to pay a lot of money along with to get to enjoy. Right now, I’m having enough of a time affording myself, and adding a little animal that depended on me would add more stress on my situation. But, the idea of opening my present and it’s being a little kitten with a bow, or how ever it would be, gets me really excited for Christmas. I think I’d better wait a year or so before I get that present, but it’s really hard to tell him, “no, I don’t want that right now” when I really, really do. Maybe I need one more yet to get more settled then I can tell him that’s what I want, if I’m smart. But, since I’m usually not smart when it comes to kittens, I wouldn’t be surprised if I called him right after I wrote this and told him that I’ve changed my mind and that’s what I want. I need some patience!

Outside of Dumas, there is a small town called Cactus. When ever you go to Cactus, it feels like you are no longer in America. Everything there is written in Spanish, and the houses are completely different. They have an elementary school there, but all the kids who continue with their education have to go to Dumas to go to school because they don’t have any thing else. Cactus has some of the best Mexican food that I have ever had. Most of the places are hard to find, because they are in houses or connected to gas stations or something like that, but once you find a good one you are sure to find some excellent home cooked food. My mom and I head that way when ever we want to eat lunch and have a little more time on our hands. My favorite one is right off the high way, connected to a gas station. Neither of us even know what it’s called, but we know where it is and that’s all that matters. There’s another on in town called El Rancho that someone from Dumas owns that we go to a lot, but they also own a restaurant in Dumas that is close to the same. It seems like every time we go, one of them has closed down and something different is in it’s place, but it never matters because it’s always good food that we couldn’t cook at home. So, if you happen to be heading north out of Texas, you just might run through there. Just give a little look around and maybe you’ll find your favorite new restaurant.

Last Saturday was the Dallas Cowboy’s Cheerleaders Finale. I’d been watching it all season and was excited to find out who had finally made the real squad. Watching that show makes me really nervous because sometimes they are very hard on the girl. They always tell them what they are doing wrong and I don’t know if I would be able to take the same criticism like they do. They tell the girls when they are looking bigger, and a comment like that could bring any girl to an eating disorder. They tell them when they look bad, and then make them get make overs and fix the things that they don’t like about them. If someone told me my hair made me look like a stripper I think I’d get a little pissed or upset, but they just say these types of comments like they don’t even care about their feelings. I guess it’s important to get what you want out of a squad, but I’d be upset if someone was so mean to me! Anyway, on the last episode they send home two girls even though one of the begged to stay, which was really hard to watch. During the final walk through on the grass, they all got together and sat down on the ground to wait and hear what was going on. At the end of each practice, the woman says who she needs to see in her office and those are the ones that have a chance of going home. On this episode, she said “these are the girls I need to see in my office” and then turned the paper around and it was blank. So, everyone out there had made it. It seems like such a tough thing to do, but I bet once you finally get through it and make it it’s all worth it.

My first summer after college I had to move back home. Now, this was a strange life change, but I had to deal with it because my lease for my new apartment didn’t start until August. While I was there, I didn’t plan to have a job because of all the things we had going on. Tons of vacations planned, and my sister was getting married in Mexico. Just that trip alone was going to be over a week. So, my friend Anthony and I decided that we wanted to run a fire works stand together. All you do is contact an owner and tell them you want to run one, they have ads in the newspaper and numbers on the stands, and they set it all up for you. They just send a ton of fireworks, and then give you how the stand should look. It was really fun. We just had to set up the stand, and then make sure that one of us was out there 24 hours a day every day. We had a camper outside, and just closed around midnight and then hung out with friends at the camper, and then just slept out there. It was a cool experience, a little frustrating at the end, but fun for sure. We ended up not making as much money as we thought because our city set up a fire ban so not many people were interested in buying the bigger fire works, but we still had fun and I’m glad that we did it together.
