Gift Ideas for Women

- Author: Greg Christmas

Since I’m having such a hard time figuring out what I want for Christmas, I got on the internet the other day and did some researching about what’s cool for girls to get right now. I went to best buy and looked at everything they had listed for women and some of them I think are unnecessary. They have a wine chilled that holds only one bottle, but you can adjust the temperature. This is one of those gifts that you give someone because you think it’s cool, but no one is going to use it. No one is going to just keep one bottle of wine chilled in it and have it plugged in all the time, and no one is going to remember in advance to plug the thing in hours in advance when they want to drink it. Just put it in the fridge, or get someone a wine chiller that holds more than one bottle. They have these new digital readers, where you can download books off the internet and then have them on the little palm reader. This is cool, but I don’t know if I want to give up my actually, tangible books. I love having books, and lending them to people when they’re good. If everyone has them some day, and it’s easy to transfer books, then maybe I’ll get one. For now, I’ll stick to my paper. They listed GPS, which is something I’d like, and a bunch of cameras, which I don’t need, and MP3 players, that I already have. So, I’m still stuck in the same place of not knowing what I want, but now I have a few more added options that I need to narrow down!

Can Cell Phones Really Eradicate the Wallet?

- Author: Megan Cell Phones

Cell phones are becoming more and more advanced to the point that they are beginning to replace standard items that we have used for decades. The need for a home phone as pretty much been eradicated by wireless internet and cell phones. The wallet looks like it’s going to be the next thing to go. In test regions people were given the ability to scan their phones to make payments and access public transit. The phones were loaded with the users bank account information and equipped with magnetic strips that allowed the phone to essentially be scanned like a credit card. The user’s identification information was also loaded onto the phone. This made the need for a wallet more or less obsolete. Cash, credit cards and Id’s no longer had to be carried. In some regions this new technology was warmly welcomed, but in other people just don’t seem ready to leave the wallet at home yet. Engineers are also playing with the idea of using a cell phone to remote start a car and even allow you to adjust the thermostat in your house before you even get home. Sony is working on kitchen appliances that can be turned on to preheat an oven or microwave a dish via cell phone. If we don’t already rely on cell phones too much, we most definitely will when they act as the remote controllers of out lives one day. Imagine how many more driving accidents there will be when we are busy not only texting and talking while we drive, but also starting the oven and buying Christmas presents too.

Pets as Gifts

- Author: Greg Pets

Lately I have been thinking about getting some kind of a pet in my apartment, but the cons of that have outweighed the pros and I’ve decided to wait. The other day my boyfriend and I were talking about what we were going to get each other for Christmas and he mentioned getting a kitty for me. Now, it’s hard for me to turn it down since I want one so bad, but I just don’t know how I feel right now. Getting a pet as a gift seems like a lot of fun, but it’s a gift that you have to pay a lot of money along with to get to enjoy. Right now, I’m having enough of a time affording myself, and adding a little animal that depended on me would add more stress on my situation. But, the idea of opening my present and it’s being a little kitten with a bow, or how ever it would be, gets me really excited for Christmas. I think I’d better wait a year or so before I get that present, but it’s really hard to tell him, “no, I don’t want that right now” when I really, really do. Maybe I need one more yet to get more settled then I can tell him that’s what I want, if I’m smart. But, since I’m usually not smart when it comes to kittens, I wouldn’t be surprised if I called him right after I wrote this and told him that I’ve changed my mind and that’s what I want. I need some patience!

Real or Fake?

- Author: Greg Christmas

When I was younger, we never had a fake Christmas tree. Every year, we all would get in the car together and go to the tree lots and pick out the perfect one. Then, every year we would take it home and decorate it. I loved it, because each year the tree would look different once we were done, with different lights or what ever we decided. Sometimes, they would be bigger and fuller and sometimes we would get a skinnier taller one. And, the smell in the house was wonderful. Now, you can just buy the candles that smell like trees, but it’s just not the same. There were issues though, like how it would get really dry towards the end of the season and the pine needles would shed onto the ground, and it was dangerous to have the lights on right on the dry tree because it could catch fire easier. Now, we have a big fake tree. It’s easier to get down and put together, it doesn’t die, we don’t have to water it, and the lights are already put on it. So, every year it is the same size with the same LED lights, but it’s a lot easier and safer to have. So, both types of trees have pros and cons, and as long as we have a tree to decorate I guess I can’t be too choosy.

Another Day at the House

- Author: Greg General

Today was just another blah day. The weather wanted to make me crawl into bed and go back to sleep. However unless you have the most awesome child in the whole world then chances are you are going to be up all day. We hummed around the house wishing we could get out and do something. Snow isn’t thick enough to build anything and let her enjoy it and there wasn’t any money to go shopping like I wanted to. Sometimes I wish that money was never an option for anyone so that when I got ready to go out and do something I had no restrictions. However we do in this life and so we stayed at home trying to figure out what was for lunch. My daughter always wants to have chips and hot sauce so we made homemade chips from corn tortillas and had some hot sauce and sat down to watch a Christmas movie. I love when it seems like that time of the year were everything is snowy and Christmas music is playing and you can cuddle up with your kiddos and enjoy their company all day long. After watching a Christmas movie and just relaxing in the warmth of our home blessed to have the things we do have we curled up in a blanket and went to sleep. Little did I know I had a sleeping possum so our great day soon turned into a fun filled clean up the nail polish day.

Lifetime Relativity

- Author: Megan life

It’s no secret that time seems to pass by faster as we get older. It seems like the holidays show up more frequently now than they did when I was five but they don’t. Birthdays still only come around once a year and Halloween still only shows up every 365 days. What makes the time seem to fly by some much faster as we get older? I’ve thought a lot about this and the only thing I can come up with is that it does. While a year still lasts 365 days no matter how old you are, it becomes a smaller fraction of your lifetime as you get older. For a two-year-old, Christmas takes half a lifetime to come around. For a forty-year-old, it only takes one fortieth of your life to come back around. When your only working with 720 days worth of life, 365 days is a pretty substantial chunk of time. When you have 14,600 days under your belt, 365 isn’t all that many. Basically, how are perceive an amount of time is relative to our current lifetime. The fact that I can say I’ve known my best friend for 20 years is astounding to me. Its hard for me to imagine knowing anything can remain consistent in my life for 20 years. An 80-year-old might feel differently about that. They would probably have lots of constants that they have know for 20 years. Maybe someone lived in the same house for 20 years, had the same spouse, several friends, or even kept a horse for 20 years. To me that’s an entire lifetime, but for a much older person, 20 years is just a fraction of the life that they know.

Christmas Ideas

- Author: Greg Christmas

I’ve been at a loss this holiday season for what I want for Christmas. Each year, it seems like there’s at least one thing that I really want to get, but this year I just cant think of anything. I had been brainstorming, and there’s nothing I NEED need. I have all the TVs in my house working and doing good, I have my car, I have my iPod, clothes, shoes, all the good stuff that most people ask for. I do need a new cell phone, but that is going to be free when I upgrade on my cell phone plan. So, this weekend we took a trip to the Dallas/Fort Worth area, which I’m not very familiar with. I know how to look up addresses and I’m really good with a map, but it’s just not the easiest way to find your way around unless you have a detailed map of each city that you need to look at. So, on this trip, I have my sister’s house address, I know what city she lives in, and that’s about all I can remember in the dark. If it weren’t for my cousin’s GPS I don’t know if we would have ever found the house, or if we did it would have taken a lot longer. You just have to enter in an address on the little gadget and it will take you right where you need to be. It even talks to tell you when you need to turn. I think I know what I want to get now, it’s a luxury that I’ve never had and never thought I’d need, but after seeing what it’s capable of I want one too.

Carol of the Lights

- Author: Greg Christmas

Tomorrow on the Texas Tech campus they are having the annual Carol of the Lights. Every year, you can go on campus and enjoy the Christmas festivities. It will start at 7 pm. Get there early and head back into the Quad, where you will see the choir and get to hear them sing Christmas Carols. All the sidewalks will be lit with candles and it will be dark. They give out glow sticks to the kids, and everyone gets to the center where the choir is singing, and then they will turn on all the lights on campus. There are more than 25,000 lights lit at one time, on eleven of the buildings on campus that are around memorial circle. There’s a big Christmas tree at the entrance of campus that is thirty-eight feet tall. So don’t forget to bring your camera and take tons of pictures of the family with the giant tree and all the lights, it could make for a good Christmas card pictures! This is another one of those moments that just let you know Christmas is soon, and I’ve made sure to go every year since I’ve been living in Lubbock. If you live in Lubbock, make sure you go. Bring the kids, it’s a nice evening of family fun that doesn’t cost a dollar and gets everyone in the holiday spirit early. It’s going to be chilly, so don’t forget to grab your scarves and sweaters and get some hot chocolate before heading out there!

Snow!

- Author: Greg Weather

Today was the first snow of the season in Lubbock! I’m not the biggest fan of cold weather unless the activities I’m interested in for the day need it, like building a snow man or snow boarding, but it’s still exciting to see the first snow of the season. And, it being December 1st, it just make it even more exciting. In Dumas it snows a lot more than in Lubbock, so I’m used to seeing it, but it’s funny to see how excited people get that don’t have it in their towns very often. When I lived in the dorms and the first snow came, the girls were freaking out. It probably wasn’t even an inch of snow and they were out side trying to make snow men and laying in it. You could still see the pavement through the snow and Tech decided that it was too dangerous to have school and cancelled it at half day. It’s cold and wet and makes it hard to drive, but I’m still excited about it coming today. Christmas time is finally near, and the snow is more proof that I don’t have to wait much longer to get to be home with the family and buying all the presents in the world! Just hearing that the month is finally December makes it okay for me to start singing Christmas songs and decorating!

Maternity Wear Mayhem

- Author: Greg General

Why is it when you get pregnant that you feel you need to run out and buy new maternity clothing? With my first child I thought I had to have all the hyped maternity clothes that come with being pregnant. Then I started recieving the baby magazines that showed these women wearing beautiful maternity clothes at outrageous prices. A single maternity dress could cost you up to at least 140 dollars if not more. I began to wonder if the material was spun from gold worms. Then I began to notice that Walmart was going to carry a maternity line. GREAT!! I thought but when their maternity line came out it consisted of a meer 4 different shirt styles and some jeans. Blah the same old thing. So I went through my first pregnancy spending money on maternity clothing. After my daughter was born it hit me that I could have shopped in the plus size clothing at Walmart and been just fine. Now that Im pregnant with my second child the books and magazines are coming in again and I’ll be danged the maternity christmas dresses are beautiful but I refuse to spend over twenty dollars on anything at anytime. I try to spend as minimal as possible on anything that I do during pregnancy at anytime, and that includes the high dollar clothing that they say will make a pregnant woman look fabulous. Since becoming pregnant for the second time I have learned that I can wear my husband’s shirts and sweat pants to be more frugile. Its not pretty but it works!
