This week was the last home game for Texas Tech this football season. The game was at 11 in the morning, which usually isn’t fun to start off but by the time the game is over you’re happy that it was an early one. I didn’t get to tail gate this game because I wasn’t there early enough, so when I got there we went straight into the game. I assumed we weren’t going to do too well, since this season has been tough on us. With that last loss to OSU and the loss to A&M before that, I was trying to be optimistic but wasn’t going to get my hopes up. So, when we started the game off with a field goal I was pretty excited that we were holding our own. And when we kicked their asses and won the game 41 to 13 I was ecstatic. It was the best last home game we could have asked for. Last year when they beat us and ruined our season, they played “Jump Around” by Kriss Kross and went wild, so this year we got to do it back to them and make them suffer. I’m glad that all the senior foot ball players got to leave their stadium for the final time with a win, instead of leaving defeated and upset. It was a great game and I am so glad that I have gotten to go to all the games this season, win or lose. I can’t wait for next year’s foot ball season to start!
This week there were a lot of upsets in NFL. At the last minute I was debating between going with Dallas Cowboys or Cincinnati Bengals. I had put Dallas in on Wednesday, but when Sunday rolled around I got up and got back online to check some stats and make sure that is what I wanted to go with. I don’t really trust the Cowboys, I don’t care to watch them play and I don’t follow them and obsess over them like most Texans do. So, I decided to stick with them and left my apartment all day so I wasn’t around a TV until the game was over. I was shopping with my friend Jenny when I got a text that they had won. I had checked online on my phone a few times during the day, and all day they were losing. I expected this game to be a blow out, since Washington sucks and it was a home game for Dallas, and when I saw the score I was mad and didn’t want to know any more. But, they ended up BARELY pulling it off at the last minute, and won by one point. And, Cincinnati lost. Again this week, I got lucky and went with the right choice. Pittsburg also lost, and there were four people on each of those teams, so 8 were eliminated this week. That leaves 8 of us. So, all I need to do is knock out those last seven people and I will finally be the Last Man Standing!
I have to say that my favorite sport to watch is definitely football. Since I’ve been living in Lubbock I have gone to almost all of the Texas Techgames at home. When I was a student we just needed to have our IDs to get in and we could sit anywhere in the student section, so we had to go early to get good seats. Now, I am graduated. I can’t just use my ID to get into the games for free anymore, but Derek’s parents have season tickets so I have gone to every game but one this season at well. I hope that no matter where I move to I can still make it to all the Texas Tech football games. I mainly enjoy watching the Big 12 Conference games, because those are the teams that we have to play. My main football focus seems to be the NFL. I love the competitions we have in my family, and since I want to win I need to follow and watch all of the teams playing in the NFL. We don’t have any games with collegefoot ball, so it’s not necessary that I watch all the games, even the ones I don’t care much about. If I hear of a good college game that I wouldn’t normally follow I like to watch it, because I just like to watch any foot ball. But with the NFL comes the competitions, and with the competitions comes the money and victory against my family!
When I was in high school, I was involved in a lot of different things that kept me pretty busy. One of my favorites was cheer leading. I loved it. It was me and five of my closest friends on the junior varsity squad, and we had so much fun. I loved getting to have a free period at the end of the day during my freshman year to go to practice and learn new things, and get to make up new cheers and dances. I loved building because I was the flyer, which meant I was at the top of the pyramids we did. I loved to try new things and challenge myself to see what I could do while in the air. I had always had a fear of heights, and during that time I really over came it and could do just about anything with out the fear getting in the way. It kept me in really good shape and make me push myself to try new things and learn how to do them. But, as with most good things, other things got in the way. Things that shouldn’t have effected it came into play, and suddenly I didn’t want to be a part of it anymore. I still loved it, still wish I could have stayed on and done it all through high school, but things just didn’t work that way for me. From all of this I’ve learned that you shouldn’t let other people stop you from doing something you really love, because now that it’s all said and done I think about it sometimes. I wonder what it would have been like to stick through it all through high school, and keep doing what I really wanted to. It’s just one of those situations that I have to believe happened for a reason.
This weekend I was pretty lazy, just trying to get over my sickness and hang out with some friends. A friend of mine called me on Saturday and asked if I wanted to go to the Tech basketball game, and I figured I had nothing much else going on and went. When I was a student I went to a lot of the basketballgames here because it was free with a student ID, but without one it’s only 8 dollars to get in. So, we went, sat really close, and had a good time. Tech won on Saturday against TAMU Corpus Christi. That night I went out and watched the Texas Tech Vs. OSU game, where we didn’t do very good. I hate when Tech loses, basketball, football, what ever. So, one Tech victory and one Tech loss for Saturday. Then on Sunday she called me again and wanted to go to another game since it was a tournament. On that game, they had a special where it was buy one ticket get one free with a United reciept. So, we went and bought some candy and showed up at the game. Again, I had a lot of fun and Tech won against Ohio State. They won the tournament, which is what we needed after that football game against OSU. It was a nice weekend of Tech sports and just hanging out with friends, I just wish we had won everything!
So this week for my Run Your Pool contest, I went with Miami. I was about three seconds away from doing with Denver, but I decided to change my pick. I had put in Denver on Wednesday since there was a Thursday game this week and I didn’t think I would be able to change it after the game. When I saw that I could, I decided to go with Miami since they were home and I just felt more comfortable with the game. Well, good idea Jana, because Denver lost. The Miami game was waaaay too close for comfort, they won in the last minute and a half. They were close the entire game, and in the fourth with two minutes to go they were behind, but scored. I had assumed I was already out and stopped watching the live updates from my computer, but continued to occasionally check the score from my cell phone while I was out. A friend of mine knew I had chosen them, and texted me right when they scored. I assumed I was getting played with, so I checked the score and saw it really happened. Two people picked Denver this week, and those are the only two people that got out so far. There is one person on Baltimore for tonight, but I think they are safe. Thank God, I really don’t want to be done with this competition. The person who is going to be the winner of the game cant lose… that isn’t really how it works.
Tomorrow night in Lubbock, my hometown foot ball team, the Dumas Demons, will be playing in their first playoff game. They are ranked second right now in their district, right behind Canyon High. Last year they made it to the first game of playoffs as well, but lost that first game to San Angelo Lake View and were eliminated. It’s pretty exciting they are back in it this year, I’m going to try and make it out there to watch them play. My little cousin plays for them, and I haven’t been to a high school football game for my home town since I was still in high school. I would love to see him play, he is the last person that I even know that goes to high school in Dumas, and I’ve never gone to a game that he’s played in. The beginning of their season didn’t look too good, they lost four out of five of their non-district games. But, when district started up, they ended the season winning three out of five games and getting to go into the playoffs. They are going to be playing Abilene Cooper tomorrow and I really want them to win! If I feel up to it I am going to go out there with a few friends of mine and support the Dumas Demons in their efforts to win!
Last year, during the Texas Tech versus Texas game that was in Lubbock, it was a huge deal for the students. The game fell on the same weekend as Halloween, so it was already going to be a crazy time. For the entire week several students camped out at the stadium for what is known as Raiderville. There were tents set up all around the stadium for those who were already in line for the game, just a week in advance. A bunch of my friends had a big set up, and we would just stay out there all day and hang out. Different companies would come out there and donate stuff, so there was always free food around for our meals and tons of other snacks to keep us fed. We even got free t-shirts that say Raiderville on them. It was a really fun experience while I was here at school. I never slept out there because my apartment was right by the stadium, but it was really fun to just hang out all day with a bunch of other Tech students who were just as excited for the game as us. I even went out there on Friday night in my Halloween costume to hang out in the freezing weather. It was worth it all though, because that turned out to be the best football game I had ever been to while I was going to school here.
I spent a big chunk of my Saturday watching college football games that were on TV since Tech didn’t play, and during one game there was a break to show Jahvid Best during the Cal game. I’m sure most of you have seen the video, but the fall actually makes me feel sick. I don’t want to post a link to the video because I don’t want to have to watch it again, but I guess I will to save you the time looking for it. He is thrown high up into the air, and lands right on his neck. That looks awful enough, but then the camera stay on him and his whole body stiffens up. It looks like he’s paralyzed. After being taken off the field on a stretcher, he goes to the hospital to find the only injury is a serious concussion. Nothing else. If you watch the video, that seems hard to believe, but he’s fine. Just a week of rest and he should be back. This really doesn’t seem possible to me, but I am really glad that he is okay because after seeing it I assumed to hear bad news. He is really lucky to only have that concussion. There’s a lot of debate going on right now with football and head injuries and how to know whether a player should come back so soon. I think it’s impossible to know unless you are a doctor. A lot of players just want to come back and play, usually their pride getting the best of them, and they don’t want to admit when they are not feeling well. I think, along with many other people, that only a medical doctor should be able to say whether or not someone is ready to play after having such an injury. Right now this isn’t the case, and I don’t see it changing soon, but it’s a nice idea to think about.
In my Last Man Standing competition I had a hard time deciding who I should go with this week, because I knew that my entire family was going to go with Atlanta. I wanted to do something different, just in case by some chance they lost. I didn’t want my mom and I to both go out, so I did my research and decided that my best option would be Seattle, because Detroit sucks. Yeah, my best option at stressing me out. The game was really close, they were losing the entire first half. At the end of the first, it was 17 to 0. I stopped looking at the updates because I was getting more and more worried about losing the competition, and started to bake some cookies to get my mind off of it. By the time I looked again it was half time, and Seattle was only a few points behind. In the fourth, Seattle was ahead by 5 when they caught an interception and scored. Thank God. I was so worried the entire game that I didn’t even want to watch it cause it was going to ruin my lazy Sunday. That was a close call, and I’m glad that I’m still in the game, luckily. Next week, I don’t yet know who I’m going to pick again. I like to wait until about Thursday to start doing research and figuring out a few options, but now that the competition is getting down to the wire maybe I should start preparing myself! I hope I win I’d love to have the money and let it be known to my entire family that I am the Last Man Standing!
