There are places throughout America, and the world, that when I lay witness to them I am awed by their vast expanse and unmolested beauty. When I am in an area that has yet to be filled with houses, industry, or any other evidence of modern civilization I can’t help but think what people one or two hundred years ago first thought as they gazed upon these seemingly never ending tracts of mountains, wispy plains, or any number of nature’s wonders. I think to myself that they must have been inspired, awe struck, and quite a bit overwhelmed. Overwhelmed at both the beauty and the loneliness that accompanies such daunting remoteness. I have come to a point where I feel as if I have crested a mountain and in front of me is a great plain, filled with nothingness, but ripe with opportunity. But…
I thought to myself the other day that I have been alive for quarter century. I am half way to being fifty years old as well as half way between 20 and 30 years old. I am now in a state of flux as my mind is constantly playing ping pong with ideas inside of my head. Back and forth, back and forth. I have my degree now and I have graduated into one of the worst job markets since the Great Depression. I am faced with a good deal of debt from my world travels so I am swallowing my pride and looking for seasonal work in retail. I am setting myself up for more, but my next step is uncertain. I am an extremely motivated and driven person, but without direction I am forced to bide my time so that I may seek inspiration. A piece of advice that I have heeded in the past is, “do what you love and the money will follow.” As of right now no one is throwing money at me to travel and surf the Internet on my couch, but I’m going to keep plugging away.

Working two jobs has it’s ups and downs. Over the summer I refuse to work more than one job. I enjoy being outside and hanging out way too much to convince myself that the extra money will be worth it. Besides, whats the point of having plenty of money to travel and shop with if you never have time to spend it? Now that it’s winter though and I can’t spend tons of time camping and climbing, I got bored enough to take on another job. If it’s too cold to go out and play, I would rather be doing something more productive than sitting around inside. Plus, I can stockpile enough money to take a trip to a part of the world where it’s warm and toasty to escape the winter for a couple of weeks. I really don’t mind working. I like staying busy. What I don’t like is tons of down time. I get lazy and never accomplish even little tasks when I have all day to get something done. I’m a procrastinator and until something absolutely has to be done, I just can’t seem to get around to it. It works for me though. For the time being, I’m happy with two jobs. Not having the time to spend money is a good thing for me right now since I’m getting ready to get back into grad school. I’m not sure how long it’s going to last, but considering it’s winter and I don’t know a ton of people in Lbk anymore, I’m just going to keep working non-stop till I have a reason to slow it down a little.

Customer service jobs are the worst. It’s so hard for me to sit there and be nice to a jerk who is ranting and raving about getting the wrong kind of cheese on his burger. It’s just a burger for Christ’s sake. You would be better off without any cheese anyways. Since I have been on the receiving end of a disgruntled customer’s wrath, I always try my best to be 100 % decent to a server or sales person who is helping me. Most of the time whatever is wrong isn’t even their fault to begin with. The people in customer service are the front line of any company. They are always the first ones who come in contact with a bad temper and always the first to be blamed. I really think companies need to try to take better care of their front lines by offering more bonuses for good performance or higher wages. It’s definitely not easy to deal with angry or inquisitive customers day in and day out. I personally have never been good at it. I have too hard of a time holding my tongue when a stranger is berating me for a situation that he or she doesn’t understand and is out of my control. Servers rarely even get the tips that they deserve for great service. 15% doesn’t go that far these days people! Even if you meal wasn’t the best or hottest, it’s not up to you to punish the server by leaving a shitty tip. The server isn’t the one cooking your food. If anything, complain to the management and get a discount, but still leave a good tip for the server. They did their job regardless of how the kitchen is functioning.

My first summer after college I had to move back home. Now, this was a strange life change, but I had to deal with it because my lease for my new apartment didn’t start until August. While I was there, I didn’t plan to have a job because of all the things we had going on. Tons of vacations planned, and my sister was getting married in Mexico. Just that trip alone was going to be over a week. So, my friend Anthony and I decided that we wanted to run a fire works stand together. All you do is contact an owner and tell them you want to run one, they have ads in the newspaper and numbers on the stands, and they set it all up for you. They just send a ton of fireworks, and then give you how the stand should look. It was really fun. We just had to set up the stand, and then make sure that one of us was out there 24 hours a day every day. We had a camper outside, and just closed around midnight and then hung out with friends at the camper, and then just slept out there. It was a cool experience, a little frustrating at the end, but fun for sure. We ended up not making as much money as we thought because our city set up a fire ban so not many people were interested in buying the bigger fire works, but we still had fun and I’m glad that we did it together.

In my twenty five years of life I don’t think that I have ever had to stress as much as I have the last 7 years. When you’re a child your parents are there for you giving you what you need through life and trying to raise you right. I was never in trouble as a kid and most of the time I was always on my toes with my chores and other things. I did find out soon enough after I met my husband that he was the man I wanted to spend my life with. I was young but not stupid. My life had lead in a direction that required me to skip my child hood and take on adult responsibilities. I don’t regret that my mom needed me after my dad died. My husband soon proposed and we were married, it was at that point that I realized I had grown up and my own adult responsibilities had started. Through the years I have been through marital issues with my husband ranging from not talking to getting a divorce and it is all over money. When you grow up the more responsibilities you take on the more money it requires. Four years after our marriage my daughter was conceived and my mind was spinning not only was I trying to feed and clothe myself and husband but now I had a beautiful baby on the way that needed just as much if not more and I was scared out of my mind. In the end however I had a great job and was able to take care of everything we needed. Things have been great since then.

This weekend Sean and I went to one of those little shops where you pick out a piece of pottery you want to make and paint it right there in the store. It seemed a little sappy to me at first, especially since there were just a bunch of little kids running around making mementos for their proud parents, but I have to admit, it was a good time. Sean and I painted coffee cups. He picked out one that had feet on the bottom and I chose a kettle-shaped cup. We picked out about fourteen colors, brushes, and rubber stamps and got to work. We ended up sitting there for a little over two hours painting and repainting those stupid little mugs before we finally decided that we had been there long enough and where ever we were at was a good stopping point. I watched about five different groups of kids come in and out of there by the time we each had out cups finished and I gotta say, our creations didn’t look much different from what the kids painted. I painted code words, inside jokes, names, and Africa (since we met there) on my cup (which I fully intend to pawn off onto him) and he painted…..I’m not sure what on his. When we were done, I was feeling a little defeated since little kids achieved in 25 minutes what took me two hours to accomplish, but Sean assured me that we did a great job and we went to go pay. The woman working there looked at out cups, and asked a few polite questions then decided that she was going to give us the child discount and not charge us as the adults that we sort of are. Figures. But regardless of how things turned out, we had a really good time painting, talking and joking around and it was money well spent. I have to go pick the cups up in a week after they have been glazed and fired. I’ll probably just tell whoever is working there then that some kids made them for me, then send ‘em to Sean.

Douche Bags
The series finale of Jon and Kate Plus 8 was on last Monday. I really hope they will find away to bring the show back on TV, but for now, Jon is going to be a douche and make sure that we don’t get to see the kids anymore unless he’s making money and looks good. So, since it’s impossible to make him look good, there’s no way it’s going to happen any time soon. All day they showed the previous episodes of the series, ending with the last episode. It was pretty say, mainly just showing Jon and Kate in the interview room talking alone and saying what they thought about the show’s ending. Jon just said douche things, like how he didn’t want his kids to be on TV anymore because it was bad for “them”, and that we don’t need to money to survive. Kate just cried and said that she wished it wasn’t ending yet but it wasn’t just her choice. We might not get to see the kids again until their 18,and I had always thought I was just going to get to watch them grow up. I hope they can figure something out so that we can at least get updates on how they’re doing. And, after these past few years living how they were, those kids are going to have it rough with out all the spoiles of being on TV and getting to take trips and make the money they were making. Once Jon realizes he’s going to have to get a real job and work hard he’ll come crawling back to TLC… hopefully.

Annoying
It’s my job to hire and to fire people. In the last two weeks I have had over 20 applicants sit down in front of me and tell me how great they were at sales and how great they were in general and that they would never be like the ass that came in right before them. How many have I hired you ask? NONE! Not one. Am I too picky? Nope. I actually gave some people a shot at the positions I have open and not one of them even showed up for work the next day. What kind of idiotic moron does that? I mean, do they want a job or not. In today’s economy, you would think that they would jump all over the job, but nooooo, they just bullshit their way through life. I am so tired of people sitting in my office and lying right to my face and telling me that they will show up for work and then pulling a “no show”. I am providing jobs in horrible time and no one wants to work. They must think it’s better to live off the system and my tax dollars. Of course that is much easier, but come on you low life scum. Don’t you get tired of people looking down on you because you are food stamps? I would rather work than to ever have to be on welfare or any type of government assistance program. The day I have to belittle myself that much is the day I buy a bottle of Windex and a newspaper and start washing windshields at the stop light.

Ever had a sales job? I have had several. I’m pretty good at too, but sometimes it can really suck ass. I mean, you always get the occasional asshole that knows it all and of course knows a hell of a lot more than you. What the hell is with these people. I’m in the profession I’m in for a reason and that is because I know my shit. If you think you know it all, then by all means, don’t hire me, do the shit yourself. Why do these assholes even call me to find out what my fees are when they know that all they are going to do is try and knock down my price and tell me how to do my job.
Then there is the person that says “Well so and so over at such and such company will do it for a third of the cost of you!”. Fine dipshit, call so and so over at such and such company then. If my prices are too high for you, then why in the hell are you even still talking to me? 99% of the time they hire me anyway because I don’t bullshit or beat around the bush. I shoot from the hip and tell them exactly how it is whether they like it or not. I DO NOT BARGAIN! My prices are set at what they are for a reason. I am in business to make money. I am not a charitable orginization. If you want the cheapest you can get, kiss my ass and then go somewhere else. I don’t need, nor do I want your business. I just don’t get these people. What the hell are they thinking. You get what you pay for and if you want cheap and you get shitty work, you have no one to blame but yourself and you deserve getting screwed.
