Shopping for boyfriends is hard. Yeah, they will usually pretend to like anything you buy or make for them, but nobody wants their boyfriend to be secretly disappointed with a gift. Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m the only one who has a hard time shopping for guys. I do tend to over-think most things. To me, buying a guy clothes is very generic and just screams “You need to learn how to dress!”. It’s true, there are lots of guys out there with a very poor sense of fashion, but I think that’s more endearing than anything else. Besides, I would rather my boyfriend not obsess over what he wears. That would be weird and annoying. I tell him I like the way he looks in green, he wears green until I tell him he looks good in another color. It’s easy and I don’t want to ruin the system. Most guy gifts like cologne and tie clips are too impersonal for a boyfriend. Guys do like electronics, but I’m not sure I’m willing to spend the kind of money it would take to get him something that he would actually like from Best Buy. I have a tendency to pick out presents that I would like too, which isn’t always the best way to go about gift giving. I have given a few pets or video games that I never really intended to let the recipient keep. I also worry about giving a guy a gift that’s too sentimental. If it’s too mushy, I’m afraid he won’t really like it but will feel obligated to use or display whatever it is. Guys can get away with giving a girl something fuzzy or shiny for just about every gift giving occasion, but jewelery and stuffed animals aren’t gonna fly when buying a guy a present. My boyfriend doesn’t wear jewelery or stockpile sentiment. He likes the trumpet and his bicycle. That’s not much to work with.

When my sister was in college, she got a kitten from the pound. Her name is Malley. She is now about 7 years old, and still living with my sister and her husband. My sister has always talked to the cat, so she meows NON STOP. Any time you’re around her she just meows even though she doesn’t need anything. It’s cute to have something follow you around all the time and want attention, but she’s hard to get used to because she’s so vocal. A few years ago, my sister got a little Boxer dog and named her Sadie. Sadie is one of the smallest full grown boxers I have ever seen because she was the runt, but she’s really cute and pretty. She has a fear of men, and we aren’t sure why since they got her as a puppy, but with some men she hides and wont let them touch her. Now, she has them both living in the house. It’s so cute to see how they can interact so well. I can’t imagine trying to get my cats to be comfortable around a big dog, they would hide or attack him. They just live in the same house, and never have fights. I would be scared to have my dog around cats because she would kill the cat, and leave my cats with a dog because they would attack him. So, the fact that they can just leave the pets there together all the time with no supervision is really nice. Someday, when I get pets, I want mine to be able to get along and be friends.

I live alone, which has always been the best for me. I love being clean, and not having to worry about someone eating all my food or being dirty. But, of course it can get lonely at times. That’s why for two years I had a fish. He was always there for me, but then passed away. I didn’t want to get another fish, but lately I have been thinking about how nice it would be to have a pet at the house with me and to greet me when I get home. There are tons of pros and cons when it comes to having a pet, and specifically for me more cons. I live in a small apartment that charges a fee to have any type of pet, which would just raise my rent. On top of the rent raise, you have to buy tons of other things, like food and toys and vet appointments, etc. I would probably get a cat because they are less maintenance and are okay at home alone more, but then that would include me having to get her declawed, buying litter, and making sure my boyfriend and I weren’t too allergic to her that it would cause problems. I’ve just been thinking about my options, and I think I need to wait until I live in a bigger place and have more time to devote to the pet. It’s just hard to wait when you go to the pet stores and see how cute they are!

My family are a bunch of cat people. All of us. We have four cats that currently live in the house with us, and I am never surprised when there are more added because my mom feels bad for them. The most recent addition, and by recent I mean many years ago, was Little Boy. Or, Scooter Brown, as he’s known on his birth certificate. And, he’s also the strangest cat ever. He is really pretty, an American Bob Tail, so he’s white and has a darker stripe along his back. He’s got beautiful blue eyes and he’s really big and muscular. But, he has no tail. Which is fine with us, but he’s a little sensitive about it. When you try to touch his “nub”, he gets pretty pissed off. And, when he gets mad, those beautiful blue eyes turn a scary shade of red. Since they are so pale, when he gets excited you can see the blood vessels in his eyes get fuller and his eyes change colors. Which is pretty creepy. Most of the time, he’s strolling around like he owns the place. He’s the biggest and strongest of the cats, but he’s also the most clumsy of them. If I had to describe his demeanor, I would never say he acted like a cat. He acts like he’s a dog, like following you around and just wanting to play all the time. He’s definitely the most fun cat we have ever had, but the strangest at the same time. I love him, and for anyone out there that doesn’t like cats, he’d be the perfect one to start you out on!

His eyes aren’t red, which mean he isn’t about to violently attack you. Kidding. Maybe.

When I was in fourth grade, a friend of mine and I found a kitten. I love cats, and have always been a cat person, so we decided to take her in and have her live in our club house. That lasted about a week, before my parents found out. They didn’t want us to have the cat, and neither my or her parents wanted her in the house. So, we kept her a day more until the snow came, and she got out of the club. She stood outside my front door and meowed until my mom let her in. My mom is also a cat person and couldn’t leave her outside in the cold. So, 13 years later, Nermal’s still here. And she’s always been my cat. We now have three other ones in the house, but she is mine. She slept with me every night in my room while I lived here, but she was too old to come and live in Lubbock with me and needs a lot of special care. She is overweight, and has diabetes and has to take medicine for it and eats special food (yeah, I know, we love our animals). Most cats don’t live to be as old as her, and lately she has been having a little bit of trouble. I really don’t even want to think about it, but my parents have been talking about what we may have to do if she doesn’t get better. It’s one of those things you hope will never come, but know that they will. Right now, I’m just going to spend as much time with her as I can, and then what ever happens needs to happen. I just hope everything is good for her and she is never in pain.

Animal shelters are a huge weakness for me. I love going and visiting all the lonely animals but I always end up getting all teary eyed because I know that more than half of them are going to be killed. Although I think most animals that come from shelters are well behaved and have been through the proper tests before being approved for adoption, I’ve actually had a horrible experience with one. My roomate and I were interested in getting a dog and decided to head down to our local animal shelter to see what our options were. We found the cutest little pekinese mix, paid our adoption fee, and continued on to Petsmart. We the purchased a few doggie basics and headed home. We named him Charlie, gave him some food, and played with him for awhile. After this, we gave him a bone and it was game over. He turned into Mr. Hyde in the flash of an eye, growling and threatening to bite us. Holy Crap! We tried to take the bone away from him to stop the situation from getting out of hand but it was too late. He’d bitten my friend and brought blood to her hand. We had to call the shelter for them to come pick him up. My poor friend was traumatized because she knew they were going to kill him. I could have cared less because that dog was BAD!

My immediate family would be considered “cat people”. We have lots of cats and we love everything about them. We are weird with them, we don’t let them outside, and they are more spoiled than most children I know of. I have my own cat, her name is Nermal and she is morbidly obese. She’s on a strict diet plan, but for some reason will not lose the weight. She is now 13 years old though and was just diagnosed with diabetes. Yes, we take out cats to the doctors to get them througholy checked out. She has to take medication for her diabetes twice a day in pill form. So, someone has to shove a pill down her throat twice a day for her to stay alive. I love her so much, she is my baby, and I wish she lived here with me but she has to stay with my parents. Then, we have others. Little Boy, or Scooter, is officially my brother’s cat. He’s insane and doesn’t have a tail, and he’s huge. Then, we have Pikachu. She’s an asshole who hates everyone but my dad and is a total antisocial outcast among the other cats. She wont even let me pet her, so I don’t much care for her. Then, we have Malone. She hates the other cats too, but since she can kick all their asses she has her own bedroom. Yeah, she stays in her own room in our house where she doesn’t leave and the other cats don’t go in. We are cat obsessed. I don’t understand people who say they hate cats when they’re never around them, you have no idea how much personality they have. Dogs are cool, I love dogs, but they are just obedient to their owners. Cats will do what they want and be their own… “person. I love my Nermal cat and there will never be another cat like her.

A pound is the worst place for an animal lover to go near. It seems like we always want to go to the pound to “look at the animals”, but I don’t think it’s possible to leave there with out saving one of them. The last time I went to the pound to look around, I looked around and found the dog that I have now. She was a pretty tan puppy with a dark stripe down her back. I loved her and wanted her then. They told me that they were about to put her down because she was covered in ticks, and I knew that my parents didn’t want me to get a dog, so I said I would just take her home and give her tick baths until they were all gone and then I would bring her back to have her adopted to someone else. Yeah, right. I took her home, and gave her a bath. Nothing. My dad and I ended up sitting down with her for over 2 hours pulling them off her, and ended with over 200 ticks in a cup of gasoline and a clean puppy named Bailey. Of course I didn’t take her back. She’s now living at home with my parents because I couldn’t take care of her in an apartment while I was in school. And now, they have their own dog, and they are best friends. I’m still glad that I got her out of the pound even though she doesn’t live with me, and I know that my parents are glad to have her to.

Cats are supposed to be sweet, loving creatures. All the cats I’ve had in the past have been anyway. There are always issues when it comes to being a pet owner. Whether you have a dog that refuses to be potty trained or a bird that won’t stop cackling, patience is always tried when it comes to animals. My cat and I have a love/hate relationship. She can be the sweetest thing ever and then turn into devil cat at the flip of a switch. She’s only 6 months old so I guess you could still consider her a kitten. She definitely still acts like a kitten but now she’s just gotten mean. If you’re playing with her, she’ll be easy at first by just pawing and biting lightly. Then out of nowhere, she unleashes her fury and the next thing you know your innocent play session has turned into a gory war movie. Cuts and scratches that have brought blood. Yeah, no fun. I plan to get her fixed and de-clawed as soon as I possibly can. Everyone tells me this will help the situation but I just don’t know. She seems so intent on behaving so badly. Its like she thinks shes a little bad ass or something. I don’t know what to do to put her in her place! Keep your fingers crossed that her upcoming surgery will put her in check and that I won’t be wasting 300 dollars for nothing.
