Annoying
The grass is greener on the other side has a much more literal meaning for me. I have a hard time deciding what type of weather I want. When it’s hot outside, I wish it were cooler. But, when I’m freezing, all I can think about is the summer time and being outside in the sun. The only real seasons I can enjoy myself are certain times in the spring and certain times in the fall. Right at the end of winter when it starts to get warm, those first few weeks when you can wear shorts and still be comfortable, those are the best. It’s not quite warm enough to be laying by the pool, but you still feel the warm sun on your skin after a cooler morning. And, when the summer is starting to come to an end, the evenings are cooler and it feels so good to sit outside. You aren’t sweating any time you leave the house, but during the middle of the day it’s still warm enough to be at the pool and be comfortable. And, each season that I’m in I wish I was in the other one so I could wear the clothes that come with it. When it’s hot outside, I want to wear jeans and my cute beanies, but I can’t. When I’m freezing and going out, I always wish that I could wear a sleeveless top or a dress and be comfortable, but I can’t. I wish it was just the beginning of spring time weather all year!

I absolutely love snow cones. In Dumas, they had a few different snow cone stands when I was younger that we would frequent. My friends and I would all be together and walk to the snow cone stand in the summer, or we would try and get our parents to drive us so we didn’t have to be in the heat. It’s just something that reminds me that summer is here, no school, and I should be hanging out swimming at the pool. They’re the perfect thing to have on a hot summer day. So, when the snow cone stands would open up each year you knew that it was soo close to summer time. I have always been a creature of habit, so I get the same snow cone every time I go. I like strawberry daiquiri and peach colada mixed together. So, that was just a special treat we had in Dumas when school was let out. Now, I move to Lubbock, and they have this place called Bahama Bucks, and my boyfriend Derek happens to work at their cooperate office. Snow cones ALL YEAR. I don’t care if it’s snowing outside, I want one all the time. I also don’t think I am ever going to get sick of them. They don’t have peach colada here, so I have to get strawberry daiquiri and peach daiquiri mixed instead, but it’s still awesome and I don’t mind. Any time I’m near one I have to drive through, and the best part is that Derek always gets coupons for free snow cones. I need to go get one right now!

I am naturally pasty. I can get a tan really quick, but before that is possible I have to get a really good burn. So, every summer, I come out into the sun in my pale skin and sit out by the pool, covered in sun screen. I slowly get darker, then, one day I think I’m safe and I don’t use the sun screen. I do this every year. I get totally burned and then I can’t do anything for a few days until it wears off. Then, voila, I am tan. And I don’t usually get burned again until the next sunny season. So, this year, I’ve decided that I’m going to battle this. At the gym where I work out now, they offer free tanning. I decided that I am going to tan once a week or so to keep some kind of base tan, and then when the summer rolls around it will be as though I have been out in the sun a decent amount of time the entire break. And, tans make me look a lot more define, so this is going to be another plus. I think I just look a lot healthier with a tan. So, I started this week, and I currently have a sun burn. In November. I feel so strange. I hope that it turns into a nice brown here soon so that I can tan again next week and it not hurt like this every week I do it. I’ve heard this theory of base tan doesn’t work when the summer rolls around, but I’ll just have to see for myself this go around.

One of the best jobs I ever had was working as a lifeguard during the summer. Sure, you had to do all the hard training for first aid and CPR, but once you were done with that, most of the time you never had to actually use that. We were always refreshed in the course, but I was lucky enough to never have to actually put my skills to use. Some people refer to it as “glorified babysitting”, which I can understand, but you really are constantly paying attention to what is going on around you. I had a decent tan, I got to hang out with my friends all the time, I got to be outside all summer, and I got to give swimming lessons to kids. It was awesome. I’m just really lucky that I never had to deal with anything that would make the job scary. There were little instances with kids running on the pavement and slipping, tears but never any injuries. To this day, when I’m at a pool I have the habit to be constantly looking out for the people swimming around me. I always find myself yelling at kids when they are running around by the water. I think it’s something that is always going to stick with me, which is a really good thing when I have kids or there are kids around me. Awesome job, I would suggest it to anyone looking for a cool summer job to make some extra money.
